Aren’t bathtub stains annoying? We know at Douglas Orr Plumbing, Inc., that stains can destroy the beauty of the tubs and later on make them look totally unappealing. Indeed, stains are among the most common bathtub issues you’ll encounter, aside from the equally ugly chips and cracks. But if you’ll clean your tub consistently and take care of it properly, you’ll surely be able to keep it stain-free. Here are some tips and tricks that may come in handy!
I. Porcelain Tubs
1. For porcelain tubs, you can use an abrasive powder such as Ajax. Pour some powder on the stained area in the tub and then add a little water.
2. You surely have a scouring pad at home. Get one and use its green side to scrub the stained area.
3. If the stain is too tough, use a pumice stone. Just make sure that your tub is indeed porcelain. Otherwise, you might just damage it even more or mar its surface.
4. Create a paste out of the abrasive powder and water. Apply the paste on the bathtub and let is sit for about 15 to 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, scrub the area and wash with water.
II. Enamel Tubs
1. For enamel tubs, you may use commercial cleaners that do not contain bleach or any harsh chemical. Bleach will react with the enamel bathtub and produce rust-like stains in the end.
2. You can also use shampoo since it’s milder than most cleaners. Rub a considerable amount of shampoo on the affected area and let it stay there for a few minutes. Wash with water afterward.
3. If there are grease, dirt and soap scum in the tub, you may apply trisodium phosphate to loosen them. A tablespoon of this material combined with a gallon of hot water will do the trick. Just never combine this with any other cleaner.
4. You can also create a paste out of baking soda (2 parts) and hydrogen peroxide (1 part). Apply it onto the stained part and let it sit for an hour. Wash with water afterward.
III. Acrylic Tubs
1. Remember that acrylic bathtubs require frequent cleaning as compared to the other two. Generally speaking, this type of tub is cleaned every week with the use of a mild detergent and a soft sponge. For the cleaning agent, a dishwashing liquid is enough. However, note that you cannot use abrasive scrubs or cleaning pads.
2. Spraying a vinegar and water solution onto the tub where there’s hard water buildup is an effective method. Let the solution sit on the tub for about 30 to 45 minutes. Afterward, scrub the area and rinse with water.
3. Never use scouring pads or pumice stones when cleaning acrylic bathtubs. These things will ruin the surface of the tub. Lastly, never wax the tub.
