Tips For Proper Washing Machine Care & Usage

According to studies, a washing machine can last for up to 10 years or more — when taken care of and used properly. It seems a really good figure to aim for, isn’t it? This is indeed an issue that should concern you. If you think about it, a washing machine is an expensive investment. A cheap one can have a tag for as low as $400 while a high-end unit can go as high as $2000. The cost just depends on the type, brand, capacity and extra features of the machine. And you still have to pay for the delivery (unless the merchant offers it for free), extended warranty plus installation cost. Then there’s the operational expense. Every time you push the button and use the washer or the dryer, your water and electricity providers bill you. So it is pretty costly to have and use this plumbing appliance at home. Keeping all these expenses in mind, it is wise to use the machine properly and take care of it in order to prevent unwanted repair expenses or worse — replacement.

Helpful Washing Machine Tips

  1. Check the water supply lines and the drain hose once in a while. Make sure that they’re not bent, leaking or damaged in any way. Also remember to have them replaced at least once every five years or less if you have the budget.
  2. When using the washer’s top as a work surface, remember to not directly work on it. Lay a towel instead to protect its smooth finish. Strong detergents, cleansers and bleaching agents may damage the finish thereby leading to corrosion in the end. Also, refrain from placing sharp objects on it to prevent scratches.
  3. Always clean spills to avoid damages on the machine especially if you spilled chlorine bleach, ammonia and other abrasive substances.
  4. Clean your washer’s fabric softener dispenser regularly by following the instructions in your user’s manual.
  5. Don’t let your washing machine get sticky over frequent usage. Wipe it on the outside and the inside with a mild dishwashing liquid to get rid of stains, grease, and what-nots. Doing so will prevent the growth of mildew, molds and other harmful organisms.
  6. Once you’re done using it, leave the door open to let the moisture inside the machine evaporate and eventually dry out.
  7. If you notice that your washing machine no longer cleans your clothes the way that it used to, it may be time for total cleaning. This should be done at least once a month by letting it run empty on a hot wash with a machine cleaner or laundry detergent.
  8. Follow your user’s manual. Do not overload your washer. Only use the recommended type of detergent and fabric softener.

We hope that these tips will not only lengthen your washing machine’s life but also save you from unwanted repair expenses.
